Goa Govt Orders Strict Action After Viral Videos Show Harassment Of Foreign Tourists On Beaches

The Goa government ordered strict action and intensified policing at major tourist hotspots after a series of disturbing incidents involving the harassment of foreign tourists went viral on social media. A video from Arambol Beach triggered widespread outrage this week after it showed a group of men repeatedly forcing two foreign women to pose for photographs. The men were seen putting their arms around the visibly uncomfortable tourists, who attempted to move away. In another incident reported from Vagator, bouncers at a local establishment allegedly behaved inappropriately with a visiting family from Varanasi, causing distress and prompting complaints to authorities. ‘Unacceptable Behaviour’, Tourism Department Warns Of Strict Action Taking note of the incidents, the state tourism department held an urgent meeting with Goa Police to discuss heightened safety measures. Officials said that bouncers are not authorised to intervene in tourist-related matters and warned that “any form of assault, intimidation, or misconduct will invite strict action in coordination with law-enforcement authorities.” Tourism Director Kedar Naik condemned the behaviour seen in the viral videos, calling it “unacceptable and not reflective of the values Goa stands for.” “In light of the recent incidents, I have directed tourist police to intensify day and night patrolling, increase vigilance at key locations, and ensure swift response mechanisms to prevent recurrence,” Kedar Naik said, adding, “These measures are being implemented to reinforce a safe and secure tourism environment in the state.” Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte said the government is committed to ensuring safety for all visitors. “We are committed to ensuring that every visitor feels safe and comfortable here. The government will continue to work closely with the police and tourism stakeholders to promote responsible tourism,” he said. The department also appealed to visitors and tourism operators to behave responsibly and maintain appropriate conduct at public spaces and establishments.
