By: Aaron Nii Kwarte Quartey The General Secretary of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA), Mr. Solomon Allotey, has underscored the vital role of the media in transforming public perception of golf and expanding its reach in Ghana. Speaking at a media seminar held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at the Bok Nam Kim Golf Club near Burma Camp in Accra, Mr. Allotey called for stronger collaboration between the sports media and the golf fraternity. He emphasized that effective communication and modern media engagement are key to making golf more visible and appealing to the Ghanaian public. He encouraged journalists to improve their understanding of the sport by familiarizing themselves with golf terminology, equipment, tournament formats, and scoring systems. According to him, “Golf is a game of integrity, attitude, and emotions, and the media has a responsibility to project it accurately in this digital era.” Mr. Allotey also appealed to journalists to leverage new media platforms to help the Association promote tournaments, events, and initiatives to a wider audience. He expressed disappointment at the modest turnout at the seminar but acknowledged that limited media interest often stems from misconceptions that golf is reserved for the elite. Highlighting the global popularity of the sport, he stated that golf attracts thousands of spectators in other countries and has immense potential to thrive in Ghana if given the right exposure. He further noted that golf offers unique benefits promoting fitness, discipline, and social connection and can be enjoyed even at an advanced age. Mr. Allotey revealed that plans are underway to introduce golf in schools to nurture young talent and build future champions. Also present at the seminar were Mr. Rodney Oddoye, Treasurer of the GGA, and Mr. Maurice Quansah, former Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and Editor of the Graphic Sports. Mr. Quansah urged journalists to enhance their storytelling skills in golf reporting and proposed the creation of a media development fund to support training and encourage greater participation in covering the sport. The event, though small in attendance, marked a significant step toward strengthening ties between the Ghana Golf Association and the country’s sports media community.
