General Motors has laid off about 1,700 workers at manufacturing sites in Michigan and Ohio. CNBC reported Wednesday that the downsizing is due to a slowdown in the electric vehicle market. Around 1,200 layoffs were at Detroit’s electric vehicle plant, and 550 cuts took place at Ohio’s Ultium Cells battery cell plant. About 1,550 additonal employees in Ohio and Tennessee will be laid off temporarily, GM said. “In response to slower near-term EV adoption and an evolving regulatory environment, General Motors is realigning EV capacity,” the company said in a statement. “Despite these changes, GM remains committed to our U.S. manufacturing footprint, and we believe our investments and dedication to flexible operations will make GM more resilient and capable of leading through change.” Automakers like GM, Ford and Hyundai saw purchasers for electric vehicles soar in the third quarter, CNBC reported. but that demand is expected to decline after federal incentives of up to $7,500 to purchase electric vehicles was discontinued in September.
