EXCLUSIVE: Comedian Mary Beth Barone is set to bring her first hour-long comedy special, Galaxy Brain, to Netflix. Coming on the heels of Thought Provoking, a 40-minute special that Barone self-released in April 2024, the hour will be directed by Ky Newman, taping at the Skirball in New York City on Thursday, March 19. Known on the stand-up side for her self-aware, darkly post-modern material, Barone is also a writer and actor who worked in both of those capacities on Overcompensating, the hit comedy series from Benito Skinner, Amazon MGM Studios and A24, which premiered on Prime Video in May and has been renewed for a second season. Overcompensating is a college ensemble comedy following the wild and chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king who becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs, while attending the fictional Yates University. Barone plays Benny’s older sister, Grace. Barone has headlined sold-out shows at the New York Comedy Festival, Netflix Is a Joke Fest, and the Edinburgh Fringe. She is co-host, alongside Skinner, of the popular podcast Ride, and has performed twice as a stand-up on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Barone is represented by Entertainment 360, UTA, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
