The G20 Health ministers’ meeting will discuss various issues on the second and final day of their meeting in Polokwane, Limpopo, on Friday. They include progress made in ending AIDS by 2030 as well as steps to achieve equal pay for work of equal value. The Ministers will also look at ways of eradicating all forms of workplace violence and discrimination in the healthcare sectors by 2028. According to UNAIDS, there was approximately 41 million people living with HIV world-wide at the end of 2024. Two thirds live in the sub-Saharan Africa. In the same year, an additional 1.3 million people were newly infected with HIV, 45% of whom are women and girls. Health Ministers from the G20 countries will discuss ways to make the HIV vaccine, Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injection that has shown exceptional effectiveness in preventing HIV, to reach high risk populations.
