From Box Office Failure To Global Streaming Success

Nine years later, John Krasinski's pre-Jack Ryan action film 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi has found success on streaming charts all over the world. The actor made the leap into action after starring on The Office. Based on true events, 13 Hours starred Krasinski as a former Navy SEAL amid attacks on a diplomatic compound in Benghazi. 13 Hours may not have made a splash when it was released in movie theaters, but the Michael Bay-directed film is proving to be a hit on the streaming charts. 13 Hours is currently on Paramount+'s Top 10 chart in multiple countries around the world, including Mexico (No. 3), Ecuador (No. 4), Bolivia (No. 5) and Argentina (No. 8). The common denominator among the countries whose Top 10 list includes 13 Hours is that they are all Latin American countries. By contrast, 13 Hours is not on Paramount+'s Top 10 list in the United States (despite its availability on the streaming service), though it was at No. 7 on November 5 and 6, which, coincidentally or not, were the two days that followed Election Day. This doesn't mean that 13 Hours has failed to find success on the U.S. streaming charts. The film is currently No. 1 on the free ad-supported streamer Tubi, which has over 100 million users and has seen massive audience growth in recent years. After being known as a comedic actor for several years due to The Office, Krasinski's starring role in 13 Hours catapulted his career in ways he had never seen before. The film may have only grossed $69.4 million at the box office and has a Rotten score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it created a new path forward for him in the entertainment industry: an action star. Krasinski went on to direct, co-write and star in A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place Part II, and played Earth-838's version of Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The actor returned to the small screen with the action thriller Jack Ryan, which ran for four seasons on Prime Video. After Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine played the titular character in five movies, Prime Video reimagined the character, with Krasinksi stepping in to play Jack Ryan. The TV show received largely positive reviews, and Krasinski earned a SAG Award nomination for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series. The Prime Video series may have ended in 2023, but Krasinski's version will live on via a Jack Ryan movie that's currently in post-production, though a release date hasn't been announced yet.
