The Wolverhampton Music City festival will see more than 50 acts performing at seven venues across the city from this Friday to Sunday (October 31 to November 2), with free entry to each venue. It has been organised by Plugged Inn Promotions with support from Wolverhampton Council through UKSPF funding and aims to provide a diverse selection of musical performances to celebrate Wolverhampton's music scene and musical heritage. Organiser Ben Bagley said it had sprung out of wanting to liven up the musical offering in the city. He said: "I'd found that open mic nights were dying a death post-lockdown and I just went into a pub and asked if I could bring in a few friends and play some music, and then the idea sort of snowballed from there. "It started getting bigger and bigger and then we got the funding from the council towards it, which helped us to set up seven venues. It's a very exciting time. "Everyone we've spoken to seems to view the music scene in a negative light, as they always say that it used to be good and this venue and that venue used to be great, so this is our way of saying that there's plenty going on." Mr Bagley said it had been a busy time, but that it had been worth the effort to make people realise how much music there was in the city. He said: "The end goal really is to get the city recognised as a city of music and that's obviously ambitious, considering where we are now and also people's perspective of the city, but it's all about increasing music tourism in the area and putting it back on the map. "We're looking five years down the line, working with the local MPs and mayor, and getting into a better position to get that recognition, but this is the first step of the journey. "We're trying to fly the flag for local acts and the Music City elements connect bands together who might not necessarily perform together, and is a purely local event."
