This college football season has seen an unusually high number of head coaches fired midseason, particularly within the SEC. LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, and Florida all have an openings at the head coach spot at this point in the season. He went 15-19 during his time at the school, falling into a similar pattern to other coaches who failed to turn the team around. Auburn’s pipeline is filled with plenty of talent waiting to be recruited, and the school has a substantial amount of resources to compete in the modern transfer portal, as well. More news: LSU Predicted to Make Shocking Hire to Replace Brian Kelly According to college football expert Bryan Fischer, offense-first former Florida head coach Dan Mullen could be an option for Auburn. “Could another ex-SEC coach who is an offensive mind replace another? If the Tigers are smart, they would give a look at Mullen as Xs and Os have never been the issue with him and his track records to the east and west of Auburn are about as good as could be expected in a search like this,” Fischer said. “He would need to have a strong personnel side in place to allow him to focus efforts between the lines, but acquiring talent hasn’t been the biggest issue for the school recently.” Mullen is currently the head coach of UNLV, who are 6-2 on the season in his first year at the top of the program. He coached Florida for four years, leading the team to a 34-15 record during his tenure. They finished their season in the top 15 three times. More news: Lane Kiffin Sounds Off On College Football’s Major Head Coach Firings The program eventually cut ties with Mullen in the middle of his fourth year at the school. He then took a break from coaching, becoming an analyst for ESPN for four years before UNLV came calling. While the coach has his flaws, Mullen does have experience delivering solid results in the SEC, and he can also call a good offense. He may not take Auburn to the top, but he could help stabilize the program and bring some fun back to a team that has not seen that in a while. For more on the NCAA, head to Newsweek Sports.
