Less than a year after Kabeer Biswas joined Flipkart to lead its quick commerce venture, Flipkart Minutes, the Dunzo co-founder is departing the Walmart-owned e-commerce giant. The company has tapped Kunal Gupta, a Flipkart veteran, to take the reins as it battles for market share in India’s fiercely competitive 10-minute delivery sector. Biswas came aboard earlier this year to architect Flipkart’s instant delivery strategy following the collapse of Dunzo, the Reliance Industries-backed start-up he cofounded in 2015. After Dunzo shut down operations amid a severe cash crunch, Biswas’s move to Flipkart was seen as a strategic hire to inject operational expertise into the company’s quick commerce ambitions. “Kabeer Biswas, Vice-President, Flipkart Minutes has decided to move on from the company to pursue other opportunities,” Flipkart said in a statement. “He has contributed notably to the growth of Flipkart Minutes and strengthening of customer experience. Kunal Gupta, Vice President and a veteran at Flipkart, will now lead Flipkart Minutes to ensure a seamless continuation of the business and operations.” Despite the short tenure, Biswas delivered notable results. Under his leadership, Flipkart Minutes scaled from near-zero daily orders to over 300,000 orders, expanding across multiple cities, including Guwahati in Assam. The service grew its dark store network to approximately 800 locations bringing it closer to competitors like Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and Zepto, which each operate between 800 and 1,000 stores. dark store networks The leadership transition comes as India’s quick commerce sector reaches a fever pitch. Dominated by Blinkit, Swiggy Instamart, and the well-funded Zepto, the 10-minute delivery category has become one of the most hotly contested battlegrounds in Indian e-commerce, with companies racing to expand their dark store networks and capture market share. Biswas had stepped back from daily operations at Dunzo last year after the start-up struggled with delayed salary payments and a leadership overhaul. His departure from Flipkart after such a brief period raises questions about the company’s quick commerce strategy and its ability to compete with established players in this capital-intensive segment. The appointment of Gupta, an internal veteran, signals Flipkart’s commitment to continuity as it seeks to establish Minutes as a credible alternative in the crowded quick commerce landscape.
