Family Hid Grandmother's Heart Attack From India's World Cup-Winning Star - 'She Is Her Pillar Of Strength'

When the stories of India's Women's World Cup 2025 victory are told, one name that will stand out is Amanjot Kaur, who produced two moments of inspiration in the final on the field. The star all-rounder produced a sensational direct hit to end a 54-run opening stand for the Proteas before taking a sensational juggling catch to end Laura Wolvaardt's one-show after a knock of 101, which turned the game in India's favour. Amanjot has been key to India's campaign with both bat and ball from the start. Infact, it was a knock of 57 against Sri Lanka in the tournament opener that helped India arrest a collapse and seal a victory. However, unknown to the 25-year-old, her grandmother had suffered a heart attack, but her family hid the fact from her in order to ensure that she could focus on the tournament. “My mother Bhagwanti has been Amanjot’s pillar of strength since the day she started playing cricket outside on the street and the park at our Phase 5 residence in Mohali. While I would be at my carpentry shop at Balongi, she would make sure to sit outside the home or at the park to oversee Amanjot playing with the boys as well as other girls. After she suffered a heart attack last month, we did not tell Amanjot about it and the last few days have seen us spending time in hospitals for her treatment. The World Cup win has surely come as a balm in these tense times for us,” Amanjot's father Bhupinder Singh revealed in an interaction with the Indian Express. I would take extra work at my shop or private work too so that I could give Amanjot whatever she needed for her training and would also pick her and drop her to the academy in Chandigarh from Mohali. Later, we got her a scooty and she would tell me, Papa chinta chi karni. Main vaddi ho gai han (Papa, don’t worry, I am a grown up now),” said Amanjot's father. Amanjot made her T20I and ODI debut for India in 2023 and has so far played 16 games in both formats. She plays for the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Women's Premier League and played a key part in their title triumph in 2023 and 2025.
