BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya has alleged that 511 illegal Bangladeshi Rohingyas were issued birth certificates in Amravati, Maharashtra, as part of what he calls a large-scale scam to grant Indian identity to illegal immigrants. Somaiya said the Amravati Municipal Corporation had illegally issued a total of 1,709 birth certificates, many of which were later found to be fraudulent. Following an inquiry, authorities reportedly revoked more than 1,500 certificates. The BJP leader claimed that an FIR had been registered and that efforts were underway to recover the cancelled documents. “511 Bangladeshi Rohingyas illegals got birth certificates at Amravati. Amravati Municipal Corporation issued 1,709 certificates illegally. All 1,709 certificates cancelled. Action started to get them back. Now, Municipality and Police say 511 beneficiaries are not traceable,” Somaiya wrote on X. 511 #bangladeshi #Rohingyas Illegals got birth certificates at Amravati Amravati Municipal Corporation issued illegally birth certificates to 1,709 Birth SCAM exposed FIR registered. He also urged the civic authorities to retrieve the cancelled certificates from recipients to prevent their misuse in fraudulent citizenship or identification claims. Later, during discussions with Collector Reddy, Somaiya alleged that similar fraudulent certificates had been issued within the city itself. He insisted on a thorough probe to identify and prosecute those responsible. A case has already been registered against six individuals following a complaint from an Amravati tehsil officer. Somaiya demanded that criminal proceedings also be initiated against government officials and staff found complicit in issuing forged documents. He said the scam represents a serious threat to national security, given that such birth certificates can be used to obtain Indian citizenship, passports, and other key identification documents.
