A Cardiff man has died due to illnesses suspected to be related to his time working around asbestos during his career in the Merchant Navy and at a steelworks plant in Cardiff. An inquest opening on Monday, November 3 heard that Alan Bridgeman Phillips was exposed to asbestos during his working career which could have ultimately resulted in his death. In January 2024 following a CT scan Mr Phillips, a 91-year-old man from Llanishen, was diagnosed with epithelioid mesothelioma - a cancer caused by asbestos exposure. After being admitted to the University Hospital of Wales on October 23, Pontypridd Coroners' Court heard his health deteriorated and he died five days later on October 28. While a post-mortem examination was not carried out, a hospital consultant provided the cause of death as due to aspirational pneumonia, pseudo-obstruction, intra-abdominal infection, constipation, and mesothelioma mixed dementia. The inquest was adjourned to a later date while assistant coroner for south Wales central Andrew Morse said that Mr Phillips' death gave "reason to suspect that Mr Phillips suffered illnesses linked to industrial exposure". At the brief hearing on Monday he gave his condolences to Mr Phillips' family. Get Cardiff news updates on your phone by joining our WhatsApp community here .
