Before the 2025 season started, the Kansas City Chiefs made a significant change to their quarterbacks room. Kansas City chose not to re-sign veteran Carson Wentz after one year as quarterback Patrick Mahomes‘ backup. Wentz made one start last season in a meaningless Week 18 matchup against the Denver Broncos. With most of the team’s starters benched, as Kansas City already locked up the No. 1 seed in the AFC and a first-round bye, the Chiefs lost 38-0. In his lone start and two relief appearances, Wentz completed a total of 19 passes for 118 yards and zero touchdowns. The Chiefs moved on to add quarterback Gardner Minshew, signing the 29-year-old to a one-year, $1.17 million deal. Wentz moved on to sign a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings as the new backup for J.J. McCarthy, the team’s No. 10 overall pick from the 2024 NFL draft. However, Wentz became the Vikings’ starter after McCarthy suffered an ankle sprain in late September. Wentz made five starts for the Vikings, recording two wins and three losses. He completed 65.1% of his passes for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions. However, he did it all with a dislocated shoulder. During the 32-year-old’s final start against the Los Angeles Chargers on Thursday Night Football, he repeatedly grabbed at his left arm in pain, playing through a torn labrum and fractured socket. While Wentz’s season is officially over, and McCarthy is back as the team’s starter, the veteran shared some exciting personal news that immediately turned heads this week. Chiefs TE Travis Kelce Reacts to The Birth of Carson Wentz’s 4th Daughter While Wentz’s NFL career hit a roadblock, he’s thriving at home. The former No. 2 overall pick from the 2016 draft announced the birth of his fourth daughter with wife Madison. Wentz shared the news on Instagram and wrote, “Welcome to the world, Hunter Mae 🥰 Daddy’s girl #4 …. God is good! 🙌🏻.” Hunter, who weighed 6 lbs, 6 oz at birth, joins big sisters Hadley Jayne, Hudson Rose, and Hayes Emersyn. The birth announcement quickly racked up over 36,000 likes, including a like from Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. Numerous of Wentz’s former Chiefs teammates reacted to the pregnancy announcement back in June. Mahomes commented, “Congrats man!” Chiefs linebacker Drue Tranquill added, “Blessings 🔥❤️,” while wide receiver Justyn Ross wrote, “Congrats brother ❤️.” Carson Wentz Predicted to Retire After Season-Ending Surgery In McCarthy’s first game back, he led the Vikings to a 27-24 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 9. As for Wentz, he’ll undergo season-ending surgery on his left arm. CBS Sports’ Bryan DeArdo and Cody Benjamin believe Wentz may hang up his cleats for good. “For all intents and purposes, Wentz’s Vikings career is probably a wrap… More than that, Wentz’s injury-fueled exit may also spell the end of the quarterback’s NFL career. That’s mostly a result of the physical wear and tear he suffered behind Minnesota’s shaky front. “Imperfect as he may have been handling the ball as Kevin O’Connell’s point guard, he showed enough in his brief Vikings tenure to warrant another backup gig somewhere else. It’s just that he’s also nearing his mid-30s after a decade of NFL service and took such a visible toll this year. “Then again, his own rugged persistence is part of the reason he suffered such serious shoulder injuries at all; maybe his never-say-die mentality will be enough to have him angling for one last opportunity in 2026.
