Estate of man killed in shooting at Richland County gas station files lawsuit, calls store ‘hotspot’ for crime

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - The estate of a man killed after a shooting at a Richland County gas station this summer is looking to take them to court. The estate of Deshawn Carroway is filing a wrongful death lawsuit against CK Acquisitions, LLC on Tuesday. The company operates the CK Mart gas station on Broad River Road, where Carroway was fatally shot on July 2. The lawsuit claims CK Mart “has been a hotspot for multiple fatal shootings, drug overdoses, and a constant source of apprehension for the entire Broad River District community.” “Residents have repeatedly flagged the establishment as a serious concern, contributing to their hesitation to conduct business nearby after dark,” the complaint continues in part. “...defendant’s gas station/convenience store is notorious in the area for criminal activity that harms their invitees.” The lawsuit also details the events that led up to Carroway’s death. Carroway reportedly got into an argument with the alleged shooter while at the gas station. According to the lawsuit, this led to the shooter going back to their car and getting a gun and later shooting Carroway multiple times. Two men, Desmond Coleman and Gregory Etheredge, have since been arrested and charged with murder in connection with Carroway’s death. Records show both men are being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center as of Wednesday. Further in the lawsuit, Carroway’s estate also cited previous incidents at CK Mart dating back to 2021 and 2022. Notably, the family of a man killed in a 2021 shooting also sued the store in 2024. Feel more informed, prepared, and connected with WIS.
