Elizabeth Esi Denyoh calls for urgent national action on diabetes

The Chairperson of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Africa and President of the National Diabetes Association of Ghana (NDAG), Elizabeth Esi Denyoh, has issued a rallying call to government, corporate Ghana, the media and citizens to unite in confronting what she described as a “silent but ferocious epidemic” of diabetes sweeping across the nation. Delivering an address at the launch of the 2025 World Diabetes Day in Accra on November 4, 2025, Denyoh emphasised that the fight against diabetes demands a “whole-of-society approach”, with wellbeing and not just disease management at the center of national health policy and community action. This year’s World Diabetes Day theme, “Diabetes and Wellbeing,” Denyoh noted, marks a shift from merely controlling blood glucose to promoting the overall wellbeing of people living with or at risk of diabetes. “It is about the mind, the body, the family, the community, and the very essence of a life lived fully, not just a disease managed,” she said. She underscored that wellbeing in diabetes care encompasses physical, psychological, nutritional, social and economic dimensions, all of which must be addressed if Ghana is to overcome the growing burden of the disease. Ghana launches World Diabetes Day Citing alarming statistics from the IDF Diabetes Atlas and national surveys, Denyoh warned that diabetes prevalence in Ghana is “soaring to crisis levels.” She lamented that thousands of Ghanaians are unaware of their pre-diabetic condition, creating a ticking time bomb for public health. Denyoh cautioned that the cost of diabetes complications such as kidney failure, stroke and blindness has become “crippling both personally and nationally.” Watch the promo to GhanaWeb’s latest documentary, which uncovers the evolution of ‘kayamata,’ an exploitative practice fueled by love charms and manipulation, titled, “The Dark Side of Kayamata,’ below: The wait is over!
