TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Minister of Education for Primary and Secondary Education, Abdul Mu'ti, stated that they will soon discuss President Prabowo Subianto's directive to include the teaching of Portuguese in schools in Indonesia. The meeting to address this plan will take place during the leadership meeting of the Ministry of Education for Primary and Secondary Education today, Wednesday, October 29, 2025."Yes, we will discuss this matter in the leadership meeting of the Ministry of Education tomorrow morning (this morning)," said Mu'ti after attending the 2025 Language and Literature Month event at Pullman Central Park, West Jakarta, on Tuesday night, October 28, 2025.Mu'ti stated that the ministry will thoroughly study the president's directive, including reviewing the currently applicable national curriculum structure. "Of course, we will examine this by looking at the curriculum structure in Indonesia and also the possibility of fulfilling the President's directive in the education sector in our homeland," he said.Mu'ti explained that the format and structure of teaching Portuguese in schools cannot be disclosed at this time, as they are still awaiting the results of internal discussions. "How the format and structure will be in the curriculum cannot be shared at this point. We will discuss it specifically during the leadership meeting at the ministry," he said.Prior to this, President Prabowo Subianto decided that Portuguese should be taught in schools in Indonesia. He announced this decision during his meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Thursday, October 23, 2025. "I have decided that Portuguese will be a priority language in our education," said Prabowo.According to the head of state, this policy is intended to strengthen Indonesia's relations with Portuguese-speaking countries such as Brazil, Portugal, and East Timor.
