EDITORIAL: Kids pay high price for lax bail laws

The new legislation will introduce so-called “reverse onus” bail on certain violent crimes. Instead of the prosecution being required to demonstrate why bail should be denied, an accused person will now have to show why they should be granted bail. Other changes expand the definition of offences that cause bodily harm and could result in more offenders under 18 years of age going to jail. In the real world, real people pay the price for weak laws. Last week in Ontario, Savannah Kulla, 29, a mom of four children, was gunned down in a parking lot. Her alleged assailant, the father of one of her children, was shot dead by Niagara Regional Police the following day after a dangerous pursuit. The suspect, Anthony Deschepper, was previously accused of another shooting in Brampton in 2023. He was wanted on several firearms offences and arrested by Waterloo Regional Police. He was due to go to court next year on those charges. There are the usual bleats from bleeding hearts and civil libertarians who will use “innocent until proven guilty” as a reason to allow those accused of violent offences back on the streets. Other critics want to see more data before changes are made. Here’s the only important number from last week: 4. That’s the number of small children who now face the future without a mother because our criminal justice system failed them.
