EA could be the next thing sucked up by Saudi Arabia in a rumored $50 billion deal

In a not-so-very-shocking update from The Wall Street Journal, it appears that EA is set to go private after a $50 billion deal with an investor group that includes Saudi Arabia. According to an anonymous source, EA is currently in the process of being sold for as much as $50 billion to private equity firm Silver Lake and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund; the same fund that is also taking over every corner of the esports industry and created Saudi Arabian-themed DLC for Ubisoft. Yipee! The deal has not gone through just yet, but the source at The Wall Street Journal believes the announcement could come as early as next week. Saudi Arabia's continued takeover of the gaming industry Image via EA BioWare The gaming community is pretty concerned with the leveraged buyout, mainly over the fate of EA's employees and the continued spread of Saudi Arabia into every aspect of the gaming industry. Gaming companies have not always had smooth acquisitions. Last year, Microsoft fired over 1,900 people at Xbox after acquiring Activision-Blizzard. EA has been very blatantly struggling over the past few years, losing its FIFA license and downsizing BioWare. Battlefield 6 is basically EA's last hope. The other issue? Studios that remain at EA will be part of Saudi Arabia's continued "esports washing" strategy. The country has been buying up almost everything in the struggling esports industry and also moving into the gaming industry in an attempt to overshadow its human rights violations, critics say. It's unclear if Saudi Arabia would have any impact on the direction of upcoming games. EA currently owns BioWare (Mass Effect, Dragon Age), Respawn (Titanfall, Apex Legends), DICE (Battlefield), Maxis (The Sims 4), and a few other popular series.
