The dramatic moment a man was pounced on by police while walking down the road has been caught on camera after a random stabbing attack on a bus in Sydney’s inner west. A 51-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries to his face, arm, and hand on Thursday after being stabbed by a stranger on a bus in Marrickville about 1am. Police say the alleged stabber, who police say was not known to the man, allegedly exited the bus after the attack before running into a nearby park. The man was recognised while walking down Illawarra Road in Marrickville. Picture: Supplied He was taken to Newtown Police Station. Picture: Facebook The incident led to a suburb-wide manhunt before a dramatic arrest unfolded about 12pm on Thursday. In a press conference on Thursday afternoon, NSW Police Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald said the 53-year-old man of Asian appearance was recognised by an officer on foot and was arrested. Footage of the arrest obtained by news.com.au shows about eight officers placing the man into a police van on Illawarra Road in Marrickville. Two officers can be seen stopping traffic as the arrest is made. The man can be seen wearing a grey top, black pants, and sneakers, which are removed by an officer at one point and placed into a bag. At one point, police take the man’s shoes off and put them in a bag. Picture: Supplied A knife was also seized, with the man taken to Newtown Police Station. Ms Fitzgerald labelled the arrest “good old-fashioned policing.” “The male was walking on a public street on Illawara Road, where a police officer recognised him and confronted him, and he was arrested,” she said. “It was good old-fashioned policing in terms of knowing where people might be residing, visiting, and just the local area.” Police will allege the man ran into Enmore Park, Marrickville after the stabbing. NewsWire / Simon Bullard. Superintendent Fitzgerald said the man is known to police. He is yet to be charged. “We do believe both the victim and the male are not known to each other,” she said. “It was random; it would have been terrifying on that bus, being a witness or the victim, and it’s important that the community feels safe. “We are confident that the person involved is now at Newtown Police Station.” The bus stabbing occurred outside the pub Vic on the Park, with manager Aidan Gillespie saying the incident was a shock. There have been cops all around this morning.” Hrak Yessayan, who owns Basiq Cafe in Marrickville, said the area was usually the “quieter side” of the suburb. Affra, who works at Marrickville Xpress tobacconist across the road from the stabbing, said she usually takes the bus home around 7pm from work. “It’s very scary. I’ve only started working here recently, but I get the bus after my shift each night,” she said. Superintendent Fitzgerald said the community should continue to feel safe on public transport. “I just want to assure members of the public to feel safe on our transport network,” Superintendent Fitzgerald said at the press conference. “It’s generally well policed by police transport command, and that’s throughout the network.” Read related topics:Sydney More related stories NSW & ACT Crime Footage of alleged bus stabber emerges Unsettling footage has emerged of the man accused of randomly stabbing another person on a bus in Sydney’s inner-west.
