Hall of Famer Michael Jordan will host a new sit-down series on NBC Sports called “MJ: Insights to Excellence.” The segment launches as part of NBC’s return to broadcasting NBA games and will feature Jordan in a recurring on-air role. What will be Michael Jordan's role? In this role, Jordan will not serve as a traditional game analyst or full-time commentator. Instead, his involvement is described as more of a feature piece: he will sit down for filmed conversations beginning during halftime of the league’s opening game on NBC, where he offers thoughts on basketball, leadership and what it takes to reach excellence. Although the full format of the series has not yet been revealed, NBC states it will air throughout the season and position Jordan as a guiding voice connecting the league’s rich history to its present. Jordan’s playing career coincided with NBC’s earlier NBA coverage, and his legacy with the network is clear, making his return to NBC as a broadcast talent both symbolic and strategic. Will Jordan break down games? According to reports, the content may include Jordan reflecting on his championship-era experiences and sharing “keys” to his success, as well as possibly analyzing modern players and game situations, though the exact structure remains unclear. While many former stars transition into full-time analyst or color commentator roles, Jordan’s new effort seems more limited in scope and aimed at impactful moments rather than ongoing coverage. This raises questions about how deeply he will engage with current game analysis compared to legacy storytelling. NBC’s decision to bring Jordan into this role signals the network’s goal to set its NBA coverage apart by combining a new platform with one of the sport’s most legendary voices. For viewers, “MJ: Insights to Excellence” provides a chance to hear Jordan’s perspective in his own words and see how his view of greatness applies to the modern game. Disappointing? When it was announced that Jordan would be part of the NBA on NBC, many fans hoped he would take on a role more like Charles Barkley's. The reason is that after Jordan retired in 1998, he hasn't been involved in the media. He has always been part of the league and was the owner of the Hornets for some time, but you rarely hear much from him publicly, especially regarding the modern NBA. After years of being the most recognizable person in sports, he wanted a more private life. After nearly thirty years of that privacy, people wanted to hear directly from Jordan about current stars like LeBron James, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Anthony Edwards. Unfortunately, we won't see as much of the GOAT as the fans expected.
