DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office says parents are facing several charges in connection with a child abuse investigation. Christopher Leon Grimes, 36, and Brittany Marie Hatcher, 29, are charged with one count of unlawful conduct toward a child and two counts of inflicting great bodily injury on a child. Deputies responded to the Summerville Medical Center in reference to a one-year-old who was motionless and showing signs of severe physical injuries. Upon arrival, they were informed by the medical staff that the child had extensive bruising across their body and had suffered two brain bleeds. The child was listed in critical condition, according to sheriff spokesman Steven Wright. The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division also responded to the medical center and interviewed the parents. Both were later taken into custody. Detectives executed a search warrant at the parents’ house at the 100 block of Glen Street following their arrest. Sheriff Sam Richardson said the medical staff are continuously working on the child to make sure they are back in stable condition. “We are deeply grateful for the medical professionals at Summerville Medical Center and MUSC working to restore this precious child’s health, and we will ensure that those responsible are held fully accountable in a court of law,” he said. Grimes and Hatcher were taken to the L.C. Knight Detention Center, where they both remain in custody. Wright said this incident remains under investigation.
