After being named as the winner, Mamdani delivered an impassioned speech, speaking about safety, education, affordability and togetherness. ‘After all, if anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,’ he said. ‘Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up. ‘New York will remain a city of immigrants: a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant. ‘So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.’ When asked if he’d seen Mamdani’s victory speech, Trump replied: ‘Very angry speech. Certainly angry towards me, and I think he should be very nice to me. Trump has threatened to withold funding for New York (Picture: AP) ‘I’m the one who has to approve a lot of things coming to him. He’s off to a bad start. Referencing the ‘to get to any of us, you have to get to all of us’ remark, Trump called it ‘dangerous’. ‘He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington, because if he’s not, he doesn’t have a chance of succeeding,’ Trump added. Trump has previously pledged to withhold federal funding for New York City if Mamdani, whom he labels a communist, despite being a Democratic socialist, took office. Democratic socialism vs communism Democratic Socialism Focuses on a reduction of poverty Limited private ownership Attempts to regulate monopolies and the excesses of a free market Promotes a common good Focuses on affordability and equality No private ownership No class distinction State-owned basics like grocery shops/more Despite the historic win, Mamdani has already ruffled the feathers of the Republican party, who aren’t too happy that a Democratic Socialist – or as they refer to him, a ‘communist’, has been elected mayor. Mamdani stood out for his energetic campaigning style and eye-catching policy proposals that include freezing rent for many New Yorkers, providing free bus service, universal childcare and trialling city-owned supermarkets. In one of the most expensive cities in the world – where a three-bedroom flat can easily cost $6,000 a month – his message seems to have struck a chord with many. Mamdani has made it clear that he is not a communist (Picture: Getty) His image as a fresh voice for people rapidly grew after he declared his candidacy for mayor in October last year. Mamdani has also been one of the most vocal politicians against Israel’s war in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. In 2023, he introduced a bill to end the tax-exempt status of charities in New York with ties to Israeli settlements that violate international human rights law. But the bill quickly went nowhere after a lack of support from the Assembly. Get in touch with our news team by emailing us at webnews@metro.co.uk. For more stories like this, check our news page.
