Dog trainer explains difference between male and female dogs - one is more 'stoic'

Thought there was no distinction between male and female dogs ? Think again. A canine behaviourist has analysed some key characteristics of dogs of different genders and suggested one might seem more 'confident' than the other. Will Atherton, from Derbyshire, has worked with numerous different breeds displaying a variety of temperaments and requirements. Whilst he emphasised that most trainers will hold varying views on this matter, he generally 'connects better' with one gender over the other. Revealing his knowledge in a recent TikTok, he explained: "So, what is the difference between male and female dogs? "And is there any difference? Well, for me, if you ask 10 different trainers, you are going to get 10 different answers. "But if you are interested in my answer, I believe that when it comes to dogs, breed, breeding, genetics [and] temperament are all way more important to determine the dog that you are going to end up with than their gender. However, for me, there are some differences. "I find that male dogs tend to be a little bit more confident, a little bit more stoic at times. And, for me, I tend to vibe better with male dogs." Will clarified that significant personality distinctions in female dogs are predominantly shaped by hormonal fluctuations. For example, female dogs experience heat twice annually, a phase during which they become more open to mating. According to the PDSA , female dogs might become more anxious during these times and show various physical signs such as increased urination and vulva bleeding. Following these heat periods, dogs often undergo phantom pregnancies, where hormonal changes closely resemble those of real pregnancies. This condition can cause increased aggressiveness and, in some cases, depression in female dogs. Will continued: "Female dogs, for me, when I have seen major differences, have usually been around hormonal things. "Especially dogs like my mate Poppy down here, that has struggled with things like phantom pregnancies. The struggling with those phantom pregnancies has created behaviour difficulties that I have had to overcome and manage with her that would never have happened with a male dog." In spite of these differences, Will reassured potential owners not to worry too much about it. He said that genetics, breed and breeding practices have a greater impact on a dog's behaviour overall. " Find the perfect breed for you, find a breeder that breeds those dogs to beautifully high standards," he added. "...G o [off] temperament [to select] the perfect dog out of that litter… "Then at that point go, 'Oh, I wonder if it’s male or female'. Go with that dog instead."
