Disney stands to lose $132M thanks to Tron: Ares bombing at the Box Office. See the latest numbers here. Tron: Ares Tron: Ares debuted in theaters on October 10 and follows “a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.” Disney has been heavily promoting the film with an attraction overlay of the Tron Lightcycle Run attractions at Magic Kingdom and Shanghai Disneyland. The usual ride soundtrack was replaced by the music of Nine Inch Nails. There is also new Ares merchandise, themed beverages, and a Lightcycle photo-op at Disney Springs. Box Office Loss According to Deadline, Tron: Ares cost $220 million net, not the previously reported $170-$180M. However, after other costs like stunts, a laser light Nine Inch Nails concert, and more, the total cost is actually around $347.M. If the movie reaches the $160M box office threshold, it should trigger $72.2 million in worldwide theatrical rentals, $37.6M in global home entertainment, close to a $100M in global home television, and an extra $5M from airlines for a total of $214.8M in revenues. This means that Tron: Ares stands to lose $132.7M after everything is accounted for. The film had a domestic opening of $33.5M which was well behind the $40-50M expectations. After its second weekend in theaters, it has only generated $103M internationally. Did you see Tron: Ares in theaters? Do you think the franchise can still make a cinematic comeback?
