Hidden amid Karnataka's coastal belt is a waterfall so serene yet so powerful, it feels straight out of folklore. Thombattu Waterfall, which is located around 60 kilometres from Udupi, has recently found itself in the cinematic spotlight as one of the filming locations for Kantara: Chapter 1. It is no wonder that the filmmakers chose Thombattu as a backdrop! For the unversed, Thombattu Falls is also known as Irkigedde or Abbi Gundi Waterfalls. It is a picturesque multi-step waterfall located near Hosangadi in Kundapura taluk, Udupi district. Formed by the River Varahi, it offers a serene and scenic spot, especially during the monsoon season when the water flow is at its peak. The falls are easily accessible by vehicle, though the last stretch involves a rough mud road. It’s a popular destination among locals, with forest guards ensuring the area remains clean and safe. Well, only a few of you Kantara fans might have spotted a similarity between these locations in both the Kantara (2022) and Kantara: A Legend Chapter-1 (2025). It is this very stunning waterfall. In Chapter 1, the protagonist, Berme (Rishab Shetty) and his gang are approaching the forest while the tiger follows them. During this scene, they cross the Thombattu waterfall. Then comes the scene in Chapter 1 where you will spot the intense pre-climax scene where Berme confronts the Brahmarakshas and pulls out the trident. That is also Thombattu. How To Reach Thombattu Via Udupi? The journey to Thombattu is an adventure in itself - and every traveller should take it at least once in their lifetime. The drive from Udupi takes you through the lush countryside, areca plantations and narrow roads. Once you reach Thombattu village, there is a moderate 30 to 45-minute trek which takes you through sloping terrain. It is usually full of mist, making it look surreal and straight out of a movie. The sound of rushing water grows louder as you descend. And then you witness a multi-tiered waterfall, gushing down rocky cliffs into a crystal-clear pool below.
