Met Office issues weather warning for 14 parts of Wales with flood alerts in place

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for Wales as it warns that "heavy and persistent rain" will hit the country this week. The warning is due to come into force across 14 parts of Wales at midday on Tuesday. Many parts of the country will be covered by a band of heavy rainfall for much of the day, with up to 50mm of rain forecast to fall in some areas. Forecasters warn that flooding is possible in some areas after a few days of wet weather . The Met Office warning states: "Following recent bouts of wet weather, rain is expected to turn more extensive and heavy at times during Tuesday afternoon. "20-30 mm of rain is expected widely, with some exposed south facing hills of the Brecon Beacons and Dartmoor likely to see in excess of 50 mm." The full list of areas affected by the rain warning is: Blaenau Gwent , Bridgend , Caerphilly , Cardiff , Carmarthenshire , Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire , Neath Port Talbot , Newport , Powys, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Swansea , Torfaen , and the Vale of Glamorgan. The forecast states: "Early rain is expected to turn heavier, more persistent and more widespread during Tuesday afternoon, before easing early on Wednesday." The warning adds that spray and flooding on roads is likely, with journey times expected to be longer. It also warns that public transport is likely to be affected. Natural Resources Wales has already issued a flood alert for the Pembrokeshire Coast due to recent heavy rainfall. Advice from the Met Office adds: "Check if your property could be at risk of flooding. If so, consider preparing a flood plan and an emergency flood kit. "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. "Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area." The wet weather could cause disruption for anyone with plans on Bonfire Night. While the warning ends at 6am on Wednesday, the Met Office forecast says it will remain "unsettled" with further rain forecast for the rest of the week.
