Drivers living with diabetes and other health conditions could be at risk of major fines. If someone with a certain medical condition that could affect their ability to drive fails to declare it to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), they could be fined as much as £1,000. The DVLA has issued guidance highlighting that numerous conditions could impact your ability to drive safely. These are categorised as 'notifiable' medical conditions or disabilities, which means certain health issues must be reported as they could compromise your driving. Furthermore, some health problems or disabilities not listed officially may need to be reported if they have worsened since you received your driving licence. The DVLA's guidance warns: "You could be fined up to £1,000 if you do not tell DVLA about a condition that might affect your ability to drive safely. "You could also be prosecuted if you have an accident." If you hold a driving licence and suffer from any of the following conditions, they could impact your driving skills and must be reported to the DVLA: Your legal right to drive while dealing with one of the above health conditions or disabilities largely depends on how it specifically affects you. According to the DVLA, there are three situations in which you must give up your licence to the DVLA, thus making you unable to drive: Whilst you're awaiting a decision from the DVLA regarding your medical condition, you're typically still permitted to drive. Following their assessment, the DVLA will inform you if you need to modify your vehicle to suit your needs or if you must cease driving. This decision will be communicated to you through a letter, which will also offer further advice on your next steps.
