Thousands Face Plummeting Subfreezing Conditions In 7 States

Residents in Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, California, and Utah are facing icy conditions as the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued freeze warnings across parts of these states. Why It Matters The NWS cautions that frost and freeze conditions “could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.” Residents are urged to take preventive measures to limit potential damages to “tender” plants from the cold. What To Know The NWS Cleveland office has issued a freeze warning for portions of north-central and northeast Ohio, as well as northwest Pennsylvania, including cities such as Akron, Youngstown, Canton, Medina, and Warren, as well as Erie and Meadville. Temperatures are expected to drop into the lower 20s to lower 30s until 9 a.m. ET Monday. In New York, several areas face active freeze warnings, including: Putnam, northern Westchester, and Orange Counties: Subfreezing temperatures as low as 29-32 degrees are expected until 9 a.m. ET. An additional freeze watch for Orange County is in effect Monday night into Tuesday morning. Western and northern New York (Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, northern Cayuga, northern Erie, Genesee): Subfreezing temperatures in the upper 20s to near 30 degrees, “with the exception of areas near the immediate Lake Ontario shoreline” are anticipated until 9 a.m. ET. Freeze warnings are also active for western Passaic County, New Jersey, and northern Fairfield, northern Middlesex, northern New Haven, northern New London Counties, Connecticut. Subfreezing temperatures as low as 31 degrees are expected, with these warnings in place until 9 a.m. ET, as of reporting. In California, the lower Klamath, Scott, and Shasta valleys of central and western Siskiyou County are under a freeze warning until 9 a.m. PT. Communities affected include Happy Camp, Etna, Fort Jones, Yreka, Weed, and Montague. Stock image of frost on an area of grass. Subfreezing temperatures as low as 30 are possible for elevations below 6,750 feet, according to the NWS. In addition to the above, frost advisories have been issued across parts of Jackson, Josephine, and eastern Curry Counties in Oregon, New Castle, Kent, and inland Sussex counties in Delaware, and Caroline, Kent, Queen Annes, and Talbot Counties in Maryland—where the agency cautioned frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation. What People Are Saying The National Weather Service forecast office, New York City said on X, Sunday: “A chilly start on Monday with lows in the 40s at the coast and in the 30s in the interior. Many areas may drop below freezing with areas of frost also possible. We’ll warm into the mid 50s by the afternoon with mostly sunny skies to start. Clouds may increase near the evening.” NWS Eureka, California, said in a post on X, Sunday: “There is the potential for frost Monday morning and again Tuesday morning. Monday morning the coastal areas and any inland valleys that remain clear. Tuesday morning less clouds are expected and the colder inland valleys are expected to see frost.” What Happens Next Local forecast updates are issued by regional NWS branches on the agency’s website and social media channels.
