Danny Rohl was ‘lively and animated’ as he led Rangers’ first-team training ahead of his Ibrox managerial debut on Thursday, Sky Sports News journalist Adam Binnie has reported. The 36-year-old manager will kick off his spell in Scotland with a Europa League clash against Norwegian side Brann, just three days after being appointed Russell Martin’s successor. Having signed a two-and-a-half-year deal with the Ibrox side on Monday, Rohl had little time to familiarise himself with his squad, yet early indications suggest he immediately injected energy and authority into training. Binnie reported that Rohl was ‘shouting at his players and leading the session’ on Wednesday, a rare sight given that managers at media-accessible training typically take a more reserved approach. Danny Rohl Prepares for Rangers Debut Binnie, reporting for Sky Sports, said Rohl was ‘really involved’ during Rangers’ media-open training session on Wednesday as he prepared for his Ibrox debut: “He looked lively and animated. I’ve been to a lot of these media training sessions and usually managers stand in the centre-circle with their hands folded, but Danny Rohl was really involved. “He was shouting at his players and leading the session. You’re definitely getting a head coach rather than a manager.” Rangers appointed Rohl following a lengthy search for a new manager, during which both Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat were approached. Gerrard withdrew from consideration first, saying the timing was not right for him to return, while Muscat wanted to see out the season in China, where he is close to sealing the Super League title with Shanghai Port. A breakdown in talks with Muscat brought Rohl’s name back into the frame, as the 36-year-old had also pulled out of contention earlier. Rohl worked as an assistant at Leipzig, Southampton, Bayern Munich and Germany before taking up his first managerial role with Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023. He helped the Owls avoid relegation in his first season, finishing 20th in the Championship, before they ended up 12th in the 2024/25 campaign. Rohl left Wednesday by mutual consent at the end of July amid a chaotic summer for the club and was later considered by Rangers before they appointed Martin. Martin’s tenure at Ibrox lasted just 18 games, during which the former Southampton boss secured five wins and failed to qualify for the Champions League. Rangers are winless in the Europa League after two games and have won just once in the first eight Premiership fixtures, sitting sixth in the table with nine points.
