Cycle of violence: Angela Dwamena-Aboagye calls for national response to domestic rage killings”

The Executive Director of The Ark Foundation, Dr Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, has called for urgent national action to confront the rising trend of domestic killings, describing them as the outcome of a long-ignored “cycle of violence” that festers within homes. Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (3 November), Dr Dwamena-Aboagye said extreme cases, such as men setting their wives and children ablaze, rarely happen in isolation — they are usually the tragic climax of repeated violence that society has normalised. “This kind of rage doesn’t occur overnight. It has happened many times over — except that nobody stopped it,” she said. “It’s a cycle of violence that thrives because we keep quiet or call it a ‘domestic issue.’” She explained that while some perpetrators may have mental health conditions, many others act out of a false sense of control and ownership over their partners and children. “Some people choose to be violent because they believe they have a right to be angry — that they are the lord of their home,” she noted. “That’s not mental illness; it’s entitlement.” Dr Dwamena-Aboagye urged the public to learn the warning signs of abuse — including patterns of domination, humiliation, or control — and to take action early by reporting or supporting victims. She emphasised that society’s silence is complicity: “Every day there’s a fight in the house, and people say, ‘That’s how they are.’ But that’s not normal. That’s violence — and it must be stopped.” Asaase Broadcasting Company airs on Asaase 99.5 Accra, Asaase 98.5 Kumasi, Asaase 99.7 Tamale, Asaase 100.3 Cape Coast, AsaasePa 107.3 (Accra).
