Curfew impacts downtown Charleston businesses

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - King Street business owners say they have seen an improvement since the juvenile curfew on King Street went into effect. Charleston Police started the curfew in June that doesn’t allow anyone under 17 to be anywhere in the Central Business District, between 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. They said they have arrested or cited six individuals since the curfew started on June 27. The curfew covers a wide part of the downtown area, which includes parts of King, Carolina, Broad and Meeting Streets. Some business owners have seen a significant difference. “Just kind of getting in the way and up to no good,” Roy Neal, owner of El Jefe Texican Cantina, said. “He passed an initiative with the help of the county city council, basically a curfew type thing, to keep the use off the grounds of King Street after I think 9:00 or 10:00 at night and we’ve seen a tremendous reduction. When you don’t have those guys just kind of loitering around on King Street at night, it makes things a lot nicer for the businesses.” The curfew for those ages 17 and under is in effect Thursday through Sunday until May and then every day during the summer months.
