Cuban Vice President thanks Colombians for solidarity

The Vice President conveyed the gratitude of his people and government for the expressions of affection shown from the South American country. Valdes noted that the first item on his agenda was a meeting with the MCSC, a group whose initiatives in defense of the Cuban Revolution he acknowledged. He emphasized that Cuba is facing the intensification of the blockade imposed by the United States. He also highlighted the contribution made last year of more than 10 tons of medicines, medical equipment, and other goods, which are currently in short supply in Cuba due to the tightening of the Washington embargo, as well as the active participation of Colombians in the solidarity brigades. Valdes commented that several of Cuba’s eastern provinces were severely affected by Hurricane Melissa, particularly in terms of homes damaged by severe flooding, as well as some 90,000 hectares of farmland. He noted, however, that thanks to the strength of the civil defense system, there were no fatalities. He also denounced the effects of the brutal US blockade, which impacts the National Electric System (SEN), health, and education, as well as other areas due to the persecution of the island’s financial transactions. He also condemned his country’s inclusion on the list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism. The vice president reaffirmed his country’s commitment to supporting Colombia in its efforts to achieve peace. jdt/jcm/ifs
