Coronation Street fans have been left divided after finding out that teenager Will Driscoll is having a relationship with his athletics coach. The newcomer, played by Lucas Hodgson-Wale, made his debut on the world's longest-running TV soap on Wednesday and is part of the latest family to move into the Rovers Return. Will is the stepson of landlady Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) and the son of landlord Ben Driscoll (Aaron McCusker). His debut on the cobbles was delayed after he did not arrive on the train from Hull as planned. After being missing for a couple of days, a woman known as Megan arrived with him, claiming she had found him sleeping rough in the sports complex. It soon became apparent to viewers that Will, who is gearing up to sit his GCSEs, had been having an affair with Megan, with the coach telling Will she was working on a way for them to be together after she had dropped him off in at his new home . Fans of the ITV soap were instantly divided though as it dawned on them that a bombshell plot had just kicked off involving the issue of grooming. One fan immediately took to Reddit , where they noted that the timing of the storyline just seems off because it is on an entirely new character. They wrote: "In this particular storyline, the audience is just thrown into something highly illegal without really being given much backstory other than they met at a camp, and he was taken in by her. There is no slow progression. It’s just already there and for a character that we don’t know and don’t yet care about that’s a really weird thing to do as a storyline and a really weird place to start him. does anyone else agree?" Another fan had completely bought into the storyline as they labelled Megan as a 'disgrace' for having a relationship with Will in the first place. They wrote: "Will's gymslip affair has obviously been going on for a while because Ollie found that old love letter. That woman is a disgrace. I can't wait for Ben to find out. And I'm praying for Ben to be the one to bring Carl's hit and run crime of Tyrone to the fore." Several other fans were quick to connect the whole plot to that of long-standing character Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine). In recent weeks, the taxi driver was elated when an old flame of his suddenly arrived in the pub, but he is currently coming to terms with realising what the relationship was after he disclosed that he was just 14 years old when it all started and she was much older. Praising the plot, one fan wrote on X: "Excellent story line; Tim, Will! Bringing awareness of the decades long grooming by white women on boys. We need inquiries now!" and another said: "I wonder if Will's story will eventually lead Tim to come to terms with his own experience as an abused young man." A third said: "I wonder if this Will and coach storyline will tie in with Tim confronting his past?" and a fourth wrote: "They’ve already sown the seeds by introducing an ambiguously-viewed grooming history for an established character: Tim. So there’s at least some nuance there, rather than a simple fait accompli. Now viewers get to see it play out without waiting for the penny to drop as it all falls into place." Another fan recalled that in 2007, Rosie Webster ( Helen Flanagan ) struck up an affair with her English teacher John Stape (Graeme Hawley) when she was in the sixth form. Everything was exposed on Christmas Day, and John later lost his job but it led to him kidnapping Rosie as revenge in the years that followed. One fan blasted the plot as simply 'dusting off' the past as they wrote: "I know ITV is cutting budgets, but surely dusting off the Rosie & John Stape scripts & simply changing the names to Megan & Will, is just ridiculous?" On Wednesday's episode Ben started pressing his son for details about where he had been as he fumed: "If this is about wanting to be in Hull, how come you needed the passport?" Viewers will remember that Will's grandmother Maggie recently found something of a love letter in Will's bag, and when asked about this, the teenager hit back: "That was from ages back. God, you're embarrassing! You're so wrong, it's laughable!" The family agreed they would leave the subject for now and would discuss it again in the morning, but over in the ginnel, Megan was waiting. During a fireworks display, Will crept out of the backyard and Megan appeared and threw her arms around him. She said: "What were you thinking going for your passport? We can't run away abroad. We need to stop people being suspicious, not encourage it. Now the police are gonna be sniffing around...just calm down, darling. You've got to stop being a loose cannon. "I'm working on a plan. A plan for us to be together. Just chill your boots. We'll be together again soon. We just need to bide our time," as they hugged again. Coronation Street is on ITV and STV at 8pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and ITVX and STV Player at 7am
