There’s been a lot of hand-wringing about earnings and future earnings whether financial markets can weather a stormy economy that’s generating layoffs. The fact is the earnings have been strong especially in sectors where growth and profits are nearly extreme: Big technology, financials, industrials, and utilities. About 91% of companies in the S&P 500 Index had reported third-quarter earnings by Friday, and 82% of those had beat earnings-per-share estimates, according to FactSet. It looks as if companies are showing 13.1% earnings growth, FactSet said Friday. And the big players in these sectors have enough pricing-and-profit-generating power that, so far, they’ve been able to absorb the blows from the Trump tariffs and whatever else the economy may throw at them. So, Micron Technology is up 183% this year. Western Digital is up 262%. Nvidia is up 40%. Microsoft is up 17.9% . But the inability to control product prices or the operating environment can squeeze results. So, Campbell Soup is down 26.6% in 2025. Lululemon Athletica is off 56.6% as it struggles to get new apparel designs to retailers. Constellation Brands is off 42.2% because alcohol consumption is falling. Chipotle Mexican Grill is off 49.3%; consumers are spending less freely than before. Which brings us to the week of Nov. 10, when some 1,000 companies report results.
