A Mayaro man was fatally shot in a confrontation with police officers on Monday. Ainsley Glenn Gonzales, of Calmapas Village, Guayaguayare, was shot by the officers in a confrontation at the Guayaguayare Fishing Port. A police report stated that around 2 a.m., officers of the Mayaro police Station responded to information that Gonzales was in possession of a firearm. A team of officers responded, and according to the report, Gonzales looked at the officers, then ran into a nearby wooden structure. The officers followed Gonzales into the structure and allegedly observed him pulling out a firearm from beneath a bed. He allegedly pointed the firearm at the officers, and several clicking sounds were heard. The report stated that the officers instructed Gonzales to drop the firearm but allegedy he refused, and the officers formed an opinion that their lives were in imminent threat. The report stated that in keeping with the TTPS Use of Force policy, the officers discharged their service-issued firearms in the direction of Gonzales with the intention of preserving their lives. Gonzales was shot several times and officers conveyed him to the Mayaro District Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead. Crime scene investigators retrieved a sawed-off shotgun from the scene. Gonzales was conveyed to the mortuary of the Sangre Grande Hospital pending a post-mortem later this week. Senior officers responding to the scene were ASP Russell, Insp Mahabir, and Cpl Singh.
