Hearts Break as Emaciated Dog Rescued by Paramedic Given Second Chance

A starving dog found running down the beach alone has been rescued by a paramedic — and now she’s been given a second chance at life. The 5-year-old Terrier mix, named Remy, was discovered by members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) on Rockaway Beach, Queens. The department shared her story online, where it quickly captured the hearts of thousands of Facebook users. "When Remy arrived at our campus she had very poor body condition, was considerably underweight and malnourished, and was urine-stained," a spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America told Newsweek. According to the shelter, in mid-June 2025, NYFD paramedics found Remy roaming the streets of The Rockaways and brought her to NYC Animal Care & Control in Queens. Staff there reached out to North Shore Animal League America for help. Their rescue team picked Remy up and brought her to their Long Island campus for medical care and rehabilitation. When she arrived, she was severely underweight and malnourished, showing signs that she had likely been living outdoors on her own. Veterinarians immediately began treatment, focusing on nutrition and gradual weight gain. Once she was healthy enough, Remy — a 5½-year-old Hound and Pitbull Terrier mix who had previously had at least one litter of puppies — was spayed and microchipped at the shelter’s Pet Health Center. North Shore Animal League America described her rescue as a great example of teamwork between the FDNY, NYC Animal Care & Control, and its organization. Remy’s story was even featured on WPIX-11’s “Tail Waggin’ Tuesday” segment on NY Living, where she quickly became a local favorite. Remy is described as sweet, playful, and affectionate. She enjoys exercise, including running on a treadmill provided by local company Zoomiez Dog Run, whose mobile van visits the shelter. “She took to it right away and loves it,” the shelter said. Shelter staff believe Remy would thrive in a suburban home where she’s the only pet, with no young children and an experienced owner who can continue her training and help her settle into family life. While her past remains uncertain, the team at North Shore Animal League America said its goal is to ensure Remy has the happiest and healthiest life possible. It encouraged anyone interested in adopting or supporting animals such as Remy to visit www.animalleague.org to learn more about adoption, donations, and volunteering opportunities. Facebook users were quick to share kind words and prayers for Remy’s future. "She is so beautiful she reminds me of boxer pity I lost a few years back with lymphoma broke my heart. These are such sweet, good babies, prayers, sweet girl that you get here forever, loving someone who will cherish you. Shared if you could keep us updated I would really like to know if she gets a home share," said Sharon. "Such a cute girl. Hope she finds that special person to share her life with," said Kathy. "Remy looks like such a darling girl. Prayers that her forever family finds her very soon," said Sue.
