More firings are expected to come in the next few weeks. With Penn State, LSU, Auburn and Florida already looking for a new leader, this could be one of the wildest coaching carousels in recent memory. Per a statement by Samford University, the program fired head coach Chris Hatcher. Via Samford: “Coach Hatcher has always represented the university and our football program with dignity and class,” Samford VP for Intercollegiate Athletics Martin Newton said. “We’ve enjoyed some incredible moments together with our success on the field and in the classroom. “However, the results on the field the last few seasons have not met our expectations, and it’s time to go in a different direction. I wish Chris and his family all the best moving forward and know the Bulldog family is appreciative of all his hard work.” The school plans to name an interim head coach at a later time. Hatcher went 62-59 during his 11 seasons with the Bulldogs. Samford started the season 1-9 overall and 1-7 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs have lost three games in a row, including a 38-14 loss to East Tennessee State on Saturday. Hatcher is 183-116 overall as a head coach, including stints with Valdosta State, Georgia Southern and Murray State. He led Samford to a conference title and appearance in the Division I quarterfinal in 2022. The Bulldogs made an appearance in the postseason three times under Hatcher. He won a Division II national championship with Valdosta State. The Bulldogs have two games remaining in the regular season. Samford will host Austin Peay in Week 12 before traveling to play No. 1 Texas A&M on Nov. 22. For more on the NCAA, head to Newsweek Sports.
