Classes for asylum seekers at Renfrew campus halted

English language classes for asylum seekers in Renfrew will be moved following a backlash from some parents. The lessons were being delivered in the community learning centre which shares a campus with St James’ Primary School and Moorpark early learning and childcare centre on Brown Street. In a letter issued to parents last night, education bosses said those using the community learning centre have never had, and would never have, access to the primary school. However, they also conceded they would move the language class to avoid any further disruption to the school community after the issue attracted widespread attention online. Social media users were also seen filming and broadcasting live outside the school campus. Explaining the letter was in response to “some concerns which some parents have raised”, the letter by Renfrewshire Council stated: “As you will know, the school building is home to a community learning facility, which is used by a wide range of different community groups for classes, during school hours. “This is common practice in many schools, has been the case since the school opened, and is typically pointed out to parents during P1 visits and inductions. I can reassure you access to the community learning facility is securely managed by staff from the community learning centre. “The school and nursery themselves are behind secure-entry doors which are managed by school staff. Any visitors to the community learning facility use dedicated toilets which are separate to those used by the pupils. “Any classes using the school library are accompanied at all times by school staff. There is no requirement for users of the facility to be PVG checked.” It added: “One of the groups which use the community learning facility is a group who receive English language classes. They are supported by council staff and facilitated while on the premises by community learning staff. “To avoid any further disruption to the school, this group and similar groups’ use of the community learning facility is being paused and alternative locations will be found. “We are aware of some social media activity around this so are writing to all parents and carers to offer this reassurance.” Don't miss the latest Renfrewshire headlines – you can sign up to our free daily newsletter here
