That decades-long dominance is now facing its most credible threat yet from ChatGPT, and a new analysis suggests the cost to Google could be striking: approximately $30.4 billion in annual search revenue. This massive financial shift could happen following the launch of ChatGPT’s first AI browser: Atlas. ChatGPT Atlas is now a direct threat to Google revenue This prediction, conducted by Flywheel Studio, is based on the enormous scale of ChatGPT’s user base. Currently, the AI ​​platform boasts an estimated 800 million weekly active users. The analysis calculated that if this user base performs 3.5 searches daily (the industry average) and shifts those searches away from Google’s current 90.4% market share, the revenue impact could reach $83 million per day. But the real challenge is not just about raw search volume. ChatGPT Atlas’ capabilities have the potential to challenge Google’s entire business model. Basically, the company could bring a fundamental change in how people navigate the web. Bypassing the middleman Traditionally, Google positioned itself as the essential intermediary. You search, you get a list of links, and then you click through to a service like Zillow or OpenTable. Well, ChatGPT is dismantling that step entirely by evolving into an “extensible platform.” “What makes this different from past Google competitors is that ChatGPT users can now access apps like Expedia or Zillow directly through ChatGPT without ever touching Google,” explains Erik Goins, founder of Flywheel Studio. This shift means users no longer search for “best hotel in Miami” and browse a page of results. Instead, they can simply ask ChatGPT, which then connects them directly to a service partner like Booking.com. The consumer journey completely bypasses the search engine result page (SERP), where Google earns its crucial advertising revenue. Goins notes that Google currently lacks a direct equivalent to this platform capability. It’s noteworthy that the Mountain View giant recently announced a massive Gemini AI-powered upgrade for Chrome. The update will turn Chrome into a proper “AI browser,” even with some agentic capabilities. However, the new features won’t reach users until at least December. In the meantime, ChatGPT Atlas is already available on Mac devices.
