Charleston launches ‘BAR University’ to simplify building review process

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The City of Charleston is hosting educational sessions to help residents understand the Board of Architectural Review process for renovations and new construction. The “BAR University” series launched in December to address confusion around the architectural review process. The board reviews all construction, renovations and demolitions visible to the public to ensure they meet Charleston’s standards. “We are trying to do much better in messaging the work that the BAR team, both staff and the board do,” Robert Summerfield, the city’s director of planning and preservation, said. The program has hosted six workshops on topics including BAR basics, historic properties, African American historic resources and the submittal process. Thursday’s session focuses on signage requirements for business owners and sign professionals. The workshop covers application procedures, design standards and appropriate sign types for different uses. “We want the community to be able to modify their house if they need to protect their investments, protect their neighbors investments,” Summerfield said. The free workshop runs from noon to 1 p.m. at the Gaillard Center at 2 George Street. No RSVP is required.
