The Los Angeles Chargers lost another major player on their offensive line, as Joe Alt suffered an ankle injury that will keep him out for the remainder of the 2025 season. With Alt out, the Chargers landed his replacement in the waning minutes of the trade deadline. Penning was drafted by the Saints in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Northern Iowa, and he has played every season in New Orleans. Now, he is off to help protect Justin Herbert. He has also only committed four penalties, which is tied for fifth among qualified offensive linemen. Penning has been an ascending guard with the Saints, and he is likely to move in immediately to protect Herbert. The Chargers have been hit hard on the line, losing both Rashawn Slater and Alt to season-ending injuries. The team needed an immediate upgrade on the offensive line, and they got one with Penning. The draft compensation has yet to be revealed for the trade. Los Angeles is currently 6-4 on the season, and is in the thick of the race for the AFC West crown. They remain one game behind the 7-2 Denver Broncos, and ensured they made the right kind of trade to ensure they remain competitive. Protecting Herbert and helping to open running lanes is paramount to the success of the offense, and Penning should do well to help both of those elements.
