Delhi’s toxic air pollution is causing more harm than one could imagine. With AQI levels going high every day, residents are coughing, wheezing and are struggling to breathe. And just when you thought the polluted air in Delhi is only going to affect your lungs, the truth is something else. Delhi’s pollution is also silently harming your heart, hormones and most of all, your immunity. Is that the fate that we have to accept or is there something we can do against it to prevent our bodies? A health hormone expert has pitched in to share her views and teach all of us how to biohack one’s way through the toxic air of Delhi. ,Tanisha Bawa, a gut and hormone health expert and nutrition coach trained at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, recently took to Instagram and posted a carousel sharing effective ways to strengthen or ‘biohack’ your body’s defences against Delhi’ pollution air. In the Instagram post shared on November 5, Tanisha says “Delhi’s air is toxic but your body doesn’t have to break down.”,She continues the post mentioning that one may not be able to build immunity against pollution but resistance can be built and urges people to think of the air pollution as an infection that one can’t see but the body feels the repercussions. Here is a 4-step program suggested by her to build resilience against Delhi pollution: ,Step 1: Limit Exposure, Wear a N95 mask (avoid cloth or surgical)Use HEPA + charcoal purifiers at home and workAvoid outdoor workouts ,Step 2: Consume right ,Get your greens as they help in boosting liver detox Add Vitamin C rich fruits in your diet as they help in neutralising pollutants Add Omega-3 fats and carotenoids as they lower inflammation and protect lungs Consume more of garlic and turmeric as they are nature’s antioxidants , ,Step 3: Strengthen Your Cellular Defense ,Bring N-acetylcysteine (NAC) supplements as this acts as your master antioxidant Turn to Magnesium and Methylated B-complex. They support detox enzymes in the body Introduce Vitamin C, D, E and Zinc to your diet as they help repair oxidative damage ,Step 4: Breathe + Sweat It Out ,Try a pursed lip breathing method where you inhale for 2-4 seconds, exhale for 4-6 seconds. This technique helps in strengthening airways Go for Diaphragmatic breathing as it improves oxygen efficiency Opt for sauna or steam as it promotes sweat detox, supports circulation and lowers inflammation as well Stay hydrated and consume a minimum of 2-3litres of water a day as it helps thin out mucus lining and cleanses lungs naturally ,Above all, Tanisha explains that the way to balance hormones against this level of toxic air is to build resilience and as pollution elevates cortisol levels and disrupts thyroid function, it becomes all the more important to listen to your body. Prioritise deep sleep, eat protein rich meals and try keeping stress at a low.
