The Senate of the University of Calicut (CU) has selected A. Sabu, member secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology, and Environment, as its nominee for the search-cum-selection panel to choose a new Vice-Chancellor (V-C) for the institution. The election for the purpose was held on Thursday (October 30) on the university’s main campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district. In the absence of the incumbent V-C, P. Raveendran, Syndicate member P. Rasheed Ahammed presided over the meeting. Mr. Raveendran was chosen for the post in August 2024 by the then-Governor Arif Mohammed Khan. P.K. Khaleemudheen, a member aligned with the CPI(M), proposed Mr. Sabu’s name. V.M. Chacko, a member affiliated to the United Democratic Front (UDF), proposed the name of Achuthsankar S. Nair, former Director, Centre for Development of Imaging Technology. Those aligned with the BJP proposed the name of K. Muraleedharan, Principal Scientist, Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Plantation Crops Research Institute. After voting, Mr. Sabu got 38 votes, Mr. Nair 20 votes, and Mr. Muraleedharan got three votes. Earlier, the Senate had chosen Dharmaraj Adat, former V-C, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, as its nominee on August 23. However, he declined to take up the job. Another meeting held on September 11 turned out to be inconclusive. It is learnt that Thursday’s meeting was held following instructions from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who is also the Chancellor of the university.
