Latest News, News November 12, 2025 Buju Banton alleges relief items stolen at port KINGSTON, Jamaica — Reggae superstar Buju Banton is among several people complaining that containers filled with relief items for those affected by Hurricane Melissa are being stolen at the port. In a post on Instagram, Buju said he could no longer stay quiet about what was happening. “The things are being stolen at the very port look at this. Why. Why. why,” the post read in part. The message was shared along with a photo showing a half-filled barrel. Screengrab of Banton’s Instagram post Other social media users shared similar stories, saying their barrels and containers with items have gone missing or arrived half empty. The Jamaica Customs Agency (JCA) had launched a Contactless Clearance Project in 2023 to help stop theft and improve how goods are handled. Under this project, customs officers who handle packages are required to wear body cameras. Speaking about the project at the time, Project Manager Kingsley Henry explained, “What we are doing now is that we are changing the process. And all that needs to happen is for your shipping agent to submit the documentation to Customs to get the duty assessment, and to work with you for you to pay your duties and pay whatever other charges you may have, and once you have paid the customs charges then Customs is in a position to inspect your cargo, and then your agent will inform you or you can go onto our track and trace portal on our website or you can use the Customs mobile app and put in your declaration number and that will allow you to track.” Efforts to contact Jamaica Customs Agency for a comment on the matter proved futile up to publication time.
