Consett has always had heart, and now it’s got a whole lot more spark too. The BIG Consett Directory, founded by local business owner Dan Bowes, is a community interest company built to support local businesses, connect people, and celebrate the best of DH8. Dan’s enthusiasm for the town shines through. “I wanted to build something that does more than advertise businesses,” he says. “This is about bringing the town together, supporting each other, and building something lasting for Consett.” At the centre of the project is the STEEL Card, a stainless-steel discount card that unlocks local offers and helps fund community events and initiatives. This winter sees the return of the BIG Consett Christmas Hunt, a fun and festive family trail through the town. Then in February, DH8 Foodies Week will shine a spotlight on local cafés, takeaways, and restaurants. There’s also a strong focus on the future. Primary schools will take part in Entrepreneurs Month in 2026, and students from Derwentside College are already developing a mobile app to keep residents connected with what’s on in town. We’ll certainly be making the most of DH8 Foodies Week; our bellies are already rumbling in anticipation! It’s a brilliant way to support local while discovering delicious new favourites.
