Buchanan Bus Station could be demolished in plan to create 'world class' transport hub

Buchanan Bus Station could be demolished to make way for a new modern bus station and transport hub. Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), which is developing the plans in collaboration with Glasgow City Council, has released images of its proposed 'masterplan' for the site. The plans would see the station undergo its first major change since it was built 45 years ago and see much of the site - including the Concert Hall multi-storey car park - demolished. The SPT hope to turn the area into a 'vibrant new gateway to Glasgow'. The SPT, which has launched a public consultation into the plans, explained: "We are creating a new vision and masterplan for Buchanan Bus Station and the surrounding urban block. This will include changes to the existing bus station, its surrounding public realm and how it interacts with neighbouring locations, as well as setting out what you need from a modern bus station. "It will also consider if there is the opportunity to introduce other types of buildings into the area, which will complement the operation of the station and the area around it. The current project focus is only on the development of a new vision and masterplan for the bus station. "While aspects of the bus station have been modernised in recent years, mainly to improve the passenger experience, safety and efficiency, for the last 45 years the station is largely unchanged from when it first opened. In late 2010, SPT carried out improvement works on the internal spaces of the bus station, however these did not extend to its external areas and the layout and operations of the bus station have not changed. The size of buses and coaches has increased making operations more challenging and there are opportunities for the bus station itself to connect more easily with the city." As part of the consultation, the SPT have shared early artist impressions of what the development could look like - though no detailed design or construction is proposed at this stage. It is expected that this stage of the work will be completed before winter this year, with further planning and design expected to come in the following years. The Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT), who are funding the project., say that bus travel would not be disrupted during construction.
