Borderlands 4 has taken the series to new heights, giving players a massive open world to explore and billions of guns to collect. It’s not an easy process to shift the game into an entirely new open-world format, and there are certainly other challenges involved in bringing a game like this to life. We had an opportunity to speak with Jamie Marchi and Grant Kao from Gearbox Software about what hurdles the team overcame to get Borderlands out the door. The biggest change from Borderlands 3 to Borderlands 4 is that it’s now an open-world experience. Players can sew chaos across a massive map, with enemies strewn between locations across wide spaces and stuffed together in tight corridors and dilapidated buildings. Kao noted that the team worked hard to ensure players had a suite of new skills and abilities that worked well at close, medium, and long ranges. Marchi spoke to the challenges of writing characters and playing them at the same time. It was revealed that Ellie will be returning to the series, which Marchi voices. According to Marchi, the hardest part is being directed, especially when she’s voiced Ellie since the early 2000s. Make sure you check out the rest of the interview. Kao and Marchi offer more insight into what it took to bring Borderlands 4 to life, which I praised highly in my review.
