The Bank of Ghana will today kick off a year-long celebration marking 60 years of the cedi, the nation’s enduring symbol of economic independence. The official launch of the Cedi@60 commemoration takes place this Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra International Conference Centre, under the theme “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.” President John Dramani Mahama will grace the occasion as the Special Guest of Honour. Introduced on July 19, 1965, the cedi has undergone several reforms and redesigns, reflecting Ghana’s economic journey and resilience through six decades of national development. According to the Bank of Ghana, the Cedi@60 milestone is not only a reflection on history but also an opportunity to rekindle public confidence in the national currency as a pillar of stability and identity. As part of the celebrations, the central bank will roll out regional roadshows, public education campaigns on clean note handling and currency security, and youth competitions in art, music and essays to deepen public appreciation of the cedi’s legacy. A major highlight of the programme will be a Currency Conference, bringing together leading experts from global central banks, academia and the private sector to reflect on Ghana’s monetary evolution and chart the future of its financial system. The Bank of Ghana says the commemoration will culminate in renewed public awareness and a collective commitmentto safeguarding the integrity of the cedi for future generations.
