By Edwin N. Khakie President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has welcomed the United States Government’s decision to extend the validity period of certain non-immigrant visas for Liberians from 12 months to 36 months, describing the move as a significant boost to the long-standing partnership between the two nations. The U.S. Department of State, in an official statement released on Tuesday, announced a revision to its visa reciprocity schedule for Liberia. Under the new policy, effective immediately, qualified Liberian applicants for B1 (Business), B2 (Tourism), and B1/B2 (Business/Tourism Combination) visas will now receive multiple-entry visas valid for three years. Importantly, the updated arrangement comes with no reciprocity fee attached. President Boakai, in a statement from the Executive Mansion, described the decision as “a clear demonstration of the strong and enduring partnership between Liberia and the United States rooted in mutual respect, shared democratic values, and a common vision for progress.” The Liberian leader praised the U.S. Government for what he termed a “positive and forward-looking gesture,” emphasizing that the decision will enhance travel convenience, encourage business and investment, and strengthen people-to-people ties between the two countries. “This new arrangement reflects growing confidence in Liberia’s progress and global engagement,” President Boakai said. “It opens new doors for our citizens to explore educational, cultural, and economic opportunities while deepening our cooperation with the United States.” He further highlighted his Administration’s commitment to promoting international relations, ensuring that Liberians benefit from a more open and inclusive global environment. In addition to the President’s remarks, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sara Beysolow Nyanti reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening diplomatic and economic ties with the United States and other global partners. “In advancing the President’s foreign policy vision, the Ministry will continue to engage the U.S. and other friendly nations to expand areas of mutual cooperation for the benefit of Liberians at home and abroad,” Minister Nyanti stated. The extension of visa validity is expected to ease mobility for Liberians, enhance bilateral trade, and foster stronger cultural exchange, marking a renewed phase in Liberia–U.S. relations.
