The Toronto Blue Jays walloped the Los Angeles Dodgers, 11-4, on Friday night during Game 1 of the World Series. Towards the end of the lopsided start to the Fall Classic, Rogers Centre was heard chanting “we don’t need you” during superstar Shohei Ohtani’s final at-bat of the night. The chanting was likely in response to Ohtani narrowing his final two teams down to the Dodgers and Blue Jays ahead of his 2023 free agency decision to join Los Angeles. Blue Jays manager John Schneider spoke after the game on the excitement from the home fans in such an important moment to the franchise. It happens in different ways and shapes and forms in every stadium,” Schneider said. “We saw it just the last series in Seattle. Kind of heard it, but it’s tough to talk about a player like that, to be honest with you. He’s special. I’m glad that the home run that he hit came when it came and we had a little cushion. But I love that our fans are passionate about our team.” Despite the Blue Jays‘ historic sixth inning against the Dodgers, Ohtani belted a two-run shot in the seventh inning to cut his team’s deficit to 11-4. The fateful free agency decision from Ohtani at the end of 2023 was recently brought up in jest by Schneider when he asked Ohtani to send back the Blue Jays gear he (and his dog, Decoy) received from the organization. “He’s a great player,” Schneider said Thursday. “I hope he brought his hat, the Blue Jays hat that he took from us in our meeting, I hope he brought it back finally — and the jacket for decoy, you know, it’s like, give us our stuff back already.” The light-hearted comment before the series was met with an earnest reply from Ohtani. “It’s in my garage,” Ohtani responded. “I plan to keep it because it was something that was a gift. “I really had a wonderful time getting to know them,” Ohtani said. “The impression I got was they were very top class. Awesome people. And so now, in the circumstance that we get to play them, it’s something I’m really looking forward to.” Although there appears to be no bad blood personally between the manager and two-way star, they will continue to battle it out on the diamond with Game 2 set to begin Saturday at 5:00 p.m. PST.
